PACIFICON 2002 REPORT
As you can see, VOMARC was well represented at
Pacificon by the VOMARC Building Contest crew.
The event was a Norcal QRP Club sponsored building contest
in which each team was given a 20 meter CW transceiver radio kit and enclosure
at the beginning of the evening, and had to build, test and exchange a message
with a control operator. The winner was the team that completed their radio and
made the contact first.
The VOMARC team split into very specialized tasks, with
Steve, K2IYQ doing the soldering, Jim, K6UUW, and Mike, WB6TMH, sorting parts
and prepping the enclosure and connectors, and Darrel,
WD6BOR, handing parts to
Steve and generally goofing off.
The winning team was made up of a bunch of ringers who had
built the kit before, and probably had a finished circuit board up their
sleeves. That could just be jealousy speaking, since the VOMARC came in a close
third out of a field of five teams.
There was an amazing amount of talent at work in the room,
with all the hot soldering irons and fevered brains raising the room temperature
at least ten degrees. Most of the projects were successfully completed in a
little over an hour.
As usual, a great time was had by all!
On Sunday Sept 9 eight members and a guest
activated W6AJF at the Sonoma Kite Festival. What a blast flying antennas on a
kite and working at least 8 states in the course of an afternoon. For
a rig, we used an IC-706 running 100 Watts from one of the batteries that HSC
had donated to the club for field day. It had been charged using the club Solar
Panel that we also had on display charging an auto battery. This worked out
really well and the battery lasted the entire time easily.
Our membership turnout was GREAT. Mike,
WB6TMH, George, K6ITE, Dan, KG6LJN, Kermit, W6JFN, Jan, AE6FQ and his guest Paul
London, Steve, K2IYQ, Jim, K6UUW and John, W6TWQ.
About 4:30 we decided to try to fly the Full
Wave 20 meter loop.
Our
signal reports were hitting 59 and 59+ from stations in California, Oklahoma,
Idaho, Minnesota, South Dakota, Whitby Island, Washington, and for our last
contact, a mobile station in Port
Angeles, Washington. We also worked a Route 66 Special event station and a
county hunter in North Dakota.
Also, George, K6ITE successfully flew the camera
kite supplied by Ron Leal at VOM.COM. More work to get it higher and stable but
we proved that it would work.
